RELATIONSHIP BY LIVIO LIVERANI (TECHNICAL MANAGER OF THE PIEDMONT DISTRICT AREA)
I address to all those who, also loving the martial art in every direction, feel that something lacks it. They even perceive that a shape of technical improvement exists that does not succeed to catch up; or one dissatisfaction deriving from a productive relationship with the own trainer; or, more simply, they do not feel until in bottom what they make.
In the West country it’s given too much weight to the combat and little to the true essence of technical and spiritual preparation of the students. In Okinawa instead, they leave you for a half-hour in a position and, when tasks of to have caught up perfect the physical and spiritual formulation, they come to...to rectify the inch position to you or makes you to observe that in that moment you do not have the right prepared mind!...
In short, I would assert that the purpose can also be caught up to gain a combat to high level, but at first to the condition for having caught up the unison with same himself. That means to pursuit, first of all, the himself harmony, with faithfulness, a great self-sacrifice, with the virtue of humility, loving same himself and the neighbour one: this is the way of the MUGEN, i.e. the oneself awareness, that it is without limit and never finish up.
The founder of “SHORIN-RYU KYUDOKAN” Great Master Sensei “Yuchoku Higa – 10th Dan”, has carried to fulfilment its work of art under the influence of masters Shiroma, Miyahira, Akamine, Kokuba and Chibana, great experts of Shuri-Te, typical and characteristic martial art of the Okinawan Island before that the modern Karate or Shotokan was asserted.
On the technical profile, the KYUDOKAN characterizes for its speed and power. The base postures are short, powerful and compact. The bodily movements are small and fast. The elbows remain always very neighbors to the body. Essential it is the ceaseless working of the hips, from the which it start every other movement of the body. The natural circular torsion of them (incomprehensible to the less initiates person) and the created circle both psychologically and physically by all the movements can let to aim and carry up the energy in flowing and combined way.
If we want to search a comparison with the modern Karate, than in Europe it is most “commercially” diffused, this has, respectively to the Shorinryu Kyudokan, the position basis more lengthened and inactive, therefore also more spectacular from “an artistic” point of view. Its movements are ample and bombastic, the natural torsion of the hips is scarcely hinted. All that determines one sure smaller speed of execution of the techniques. They are easier to learn, but less strong, less deepened; the just psychical and physical harmony and the Zen philosophy lacks, philosophy that still today establish the good character, humble, but resolute at the same time, of the Ryu Kyu Japanese people. Besides, I had realize that in Europe, and above all here in Italy, the modern Karate more and more stretches to transform in one pure and simple sport. This is the more serious fact because disparage it and renders it meaningless.
The Karate, since the most ancient times, always has been an art, i.e. a formal training that needs technical ability matching with creative instinct, passion, unselfish love. In the context, the Katas, which contain and recapitulate the sweeping Zen experience of many generations of wise masters-sensei, are the more important component, because they are the instruments with which a continuous technical improvement is caught up. And the technical improvement is also in the basis of the inner improvement, spiritual, that it is and it must be the supreme aim of the Karate.
The athleticism and the competitions do not have to be refused on purpose, but only by the way, limited one in the time, during the life of the martial art ‘s practising. Their value must be meant in relative sense. They can be of the useful experiences in order better to know same himself and to put themselves to the test, but they cannot more be nothing.
It does not have to make Karate, it must “be one and the same with Karate”.
